Local Program/Action Focus for 2009-2010

Each year in May, the LWVE holds an annual meeting to elect officers, pass a budget, consider by-laws changes and decide upon local program and action. The May 2009 annual meeting chose the following items for this year:

Homeless Students Attending Evanston Schools: The League will seek to determine the scope of the problem and our school districts’ current response to it. There will be speakers, presentations, and possibly recommendations for more effective solutions. Potential issues to be studied are: how many homeless students are currently in Evanston schools; are they falling through the cracks; and what support is currently being provided by District 65.

Role of TIFs – Tax Increment Financing Districts in Evanston: We will review locations, extents, original purposes, and actual implementations of TIFs, and then try to determine if closer oversight and clearer accountability are needed. Additional issues to address are: where are the districts; how much money is being spent; and, how the districts are set up.

IN ADDITION to the two action items above -
A number of additional issues were raised for possible action in 2009-2010, including working with the LWVIL project to ensure an accurate census in 2010 and exploring the role that the League could play in monitoring the management and impact of federal stimulus funds in Evanston. There is continuing interest in many other relevant LWVE positions, such as merit selection of judges, environmental issues, educational quality, and criminal justice.

Additional information about the local policy issues that have been studied and continue to be of vital concern can be obtained at the LWVE office, 2100 Ridge Avenue.
