About Us

Mission: Empowering voters. Defending democracy.

Vision: We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.

Nonpartisan Political Policy of LWV Evanston
The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League is a nonpartisan political organization: nonpartisan in that it never supports or opposes any candidates or political party, political in that it takes action on governmental issues selected by its members on which positions have been adopted through study and member agreement.

The League believes that participation in political parties and advocacy organizations is essential to civic engagement. We encourage League members, unless otherwise restricted as stated in this policy, to work for the parties, candidates and causes of their choice, provided they act as individuals and not in the name of the League. Likewise, we encourage members to run for local office and to serve on appointed civic boards, committees and commissions.

The League of Women Voters is a political grassroots network and membership organization that believes the freedom to vote is a nonpartisan issue. For more than a century, we’ve worked to empower voters and defend democracy. As a women-led organization, we encourage everyone to take part in our democracy. With active Leagues in all 50 states and more than 750 Leagues across the country, we engage in advocacy, education, litigation, and organizing to protect every American’s freedom to vote. The LWV of Evanston is a non-profit 501(c)(3)

The Evanston League has a rich history of voter and citizen education in the Evanston community. The Evanston League also serves Skokie. Our members are women and men of every age, race, background, and political perspective who believe that informed citizens are the key to effective government.

The League has an active presence in the Evanston community, serving the needs of the community through public meetings on current governmental issues, candidate forums, voter registration, observing and reporting on Evanston governmental boards and commissions and taking action on selected topics which the League has studied.

We serve the interests of our members, too, with networking opportunities through meetings and luncheons, drinks & dialogue gatherings with speakers, a chance to be up close and personal with federal, state and local legislators and getting the buzz on issues through the Intercom Newsletter.
