Get Involved: Big and Little Ways to Engage with the LWVE

by Betty Hayford and Joan Linsenmeier

The League offers a wide range of opportunities for hands-on involvement– some requiring just a few hours of your time and some longer-term. Some current possibilities are highlighted here.

At our old board/new board gathering in June, members talked about their histories with the League. Some were dues-paying members for many years before getting actively involved. Some participated in occasional short-term projects. Others quickly jumped into leadership roles. All agreed that League involvement has enhanced their lives. It provides a way to have an impact on causes they care about, and this is a time when they want to do something that makes a difference. They also value the opportunities to interact with, and learn from, other engaged members.

Whether you have a few hours or several days a month to contribute, your involvement can help the LWVE fulfill its mission to empower and educate voters and to defend democracy. Key current needs are described below, along with some tips on interests and skills that could be helpful. Reach out to our LWVE co-presidents or the contacts listed below for more information or to sign up.

Event planning
A key goal of the LWVE is voter education, and we aim to offer monthly educational programs. These may feature members of local, state, or national government bodies, experts on relevant topics, or LWVE committees sharing what they’ve learned through community studies.
  • Do you want to help generate ideas for events?
  • Can you help find speakers or venues or work on logistics?
  • Would you like to help events run smoothly by assisting with check-in, setting up box lunches, or creating publicity?

Fundraising
We are planning a major fundraiser for 2026. In the past we have hosted dinner events with a speaker and silent auction attracting 60-80 guests. Other kinds of fund raisers are possible too.
  • Have you worked on development campaigns?
  • Have you organized large events?
  • Do you have experience with other kinds of fundraising?
  • Can you help with crucial tasks like stuffing envelopes, planning menus, making lists, and keeping records?

Communications and documentation
The LWVE provides information for our members and others in our community through many channels. We also archive information on past projects and events.
  • Can you help to write or edit LWVE updates, reports, or Intercom articles?
  • Can you take photos at League events?
  • Would you like to help create and maintain content for our website?
