What is the LWVE Voter Services team up to this summer, besides eating lots of ice cream on hot summer days? Voter registration, VOTE411 updates, planning for candidate forums, and much more. Some highlights:
Ricky Birdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, June 21
The LWVE once again had a table at the Race Against Hate, held on June 21, to provide voting information and encourage participation in the Fall Election. The Race Against Hate honors the legacy of Ricky Byrdsong, former Northwestern University Basketball Coach and Skokie resident, who was murdered by a white supremacist in 1999 while walking in his neighborhood. The race is coordinated by the YWCA Evanston/North Shore.
Special thanks to LWVE deputy registrars Beth Demes and Gail Weisberg, who staffed the event table, starting at 6:30 am!
Connections Block Party, July 25
As we finalize this newsletter, we are gathering our supplies for the Connections for the Homeless fifth annual Block Party on July 25. LWVE volunteers will staff a voter registration/information table to help make sure that our community is ready to vote in the upcoming election. The Block Party is family friendly with games, food, and music. Last year, even with the threat of rain, more than 1,000 people attended the event. More info is at
connect2home.org/blockparty.
In Action: The November Election
Right after July 4, we dove deeper into our work for the Gubernatorial Election, when we’ll also be voting for members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, many state and county offices, and other positions. LWVE will continue to have voter information tables at a variety of locations in Evanston and Skokie. We are also working on candidate forums with other Leagues in shared districts (Congress, State Legislature, Cook County). Forum dates are currently TBD.
Key Election Dates (shortened list)
- Election Day: November 3
- Early Voting (all early voting locations): October 19-November 2
